Shambles in York is a small street which dates back to the fourteenth century. It's overhanging buildings and original features make it a huge tourist destination for people from all over the world. This painting was executed in 1958 and was an image that Isherwood produced a few times in his career. James Lawrence Isherwood - Shambles, York is particularly well painted with his trademark use of strong colours laid sympathetically juxtaposed to one another on the board.
